Our History

The History

The Imperial 20 began in 1994 with just 17 runners and has been held annually ever since. From these modest beginnings, the event has expanded to include both walking and running races of various distances. The highlight is the 32 km running event, which starts at Naracoopa on the east coast and finishes at Currie, the main township on the opposite side of the island.

Who Gets Involved?

Celebrating its 32nd year, the Imperial 20 is a true community event, involving over 20% of the population either competing or volunteering. Known as the “event that stops an island,” it features a race for everyone, from a pram-pushing event to the junior dash, and even a walking event for the active aging. The event is highly valued by the King Island community.

What’s Special?

The Imperial 20 is renowned for its genuine King Island friendliness, which sets it apart. Visitors have the chance to compete in a unique event and experience the welcoming community. The event has a reputation as a must-do among the running community, attracting participants from all over Australia. The 32 km run features a staggered start, similar to the Stawell Gift, adding to its uniqueness. The Imperial’s combination of challenging races and community spirit makes it special for both locals and visitors alike.
